Wednesday, June 10, 2009 -- Afternoon

The Steelers received their Super Bowl rings yesterday evening. I really am not into garish jewlery , but I have to admit that the rings do look nice. There are six big diamonds surrounding a field of little diamonds with the Steeler logo in the center. It does look stylish.

Monday, February 9, 2009 -- Late Afternoon

Ben Roethlisberger told Sports Illustrated that he played with broken ribs in the Super Bowl. I'm not sure what it is about Roethlisberger, but he seems to revile in proclaiming AFTER the game that he played the game with some sort of injury. The Steelers are saying that they know nothing about it. Roethlisberger claims that the x-rays were okay before the game, but an MRI after the game showed that he had two broken ribs. I really wonder about Roethlisberger. I'm not sure if he is a guy who soldiers through injury or if he makes up injuries to make it seem like he's even better than he is.

Tuesday, February 3, 2009 -- Early Evening

I went to the Steelers' parade today. The parade started at noon in downtown Pittsburgh, and i got there on a very packed bus around 11:15. It was cold outside, but no one seemed to care as they crowded around the parade route. I did my best to get some pictures of the event. It was really exciting. Even though I was sick with a cold and freezing in the cold, I wouldn't have missed it for anything.

It was Super Bowl Sunday. A slew of Steelers fans were at the game. The Steelers travel well (meaning that you can always find Steelers fans at away games), and there are quite a few former Pittsburghers who live in Tampa Bay, where Super Bowl XLIII was held. The Steelers dominated in the first half, but things weren't looking good in the second half. James Harrion got an interception at the end of the first half and ran 100 yards to score a touchdown. It is the longest touchdown run in Super Bowl history. Things were looking good with the Steelers leading by 10 points. The Cardinals came back from a 13 point deficit to take a three point lead. Less than a minute was left in the game when Ben Roethlisberger threw the ball to Santonio Holmes in the corner of the end zone. Holmes got both feet down and gave the Steelers the lead with the touchdown. The Cardinals had 35 seconds to get the ball back down the field. With only 5 seconds left, the Steelers got an interception to win the game. I was really sure that the team would not win based on the second half, but the last minute was truly exciting. The Steelers are the first franchise to get six Super Bowls. Mike Tomlin is also the youngest coach to win the Super Bowl. Santonio Holmes got the game MVP for the great plays he made in the game. What a win! Final score: Steelers 27 - Cardinals 23.

Thursday, January 29, 2009 -- Late Afternoon

I went to the Pittsburgh Steelers fan rally held in downtown Pittsburgh. The rally was held so fans could get together, wear Steeler gear, and cheer for the team. Everyone is really excited about Super Bowl XLIII, and there was a sign at the rally from a fan who is disgruntled over the possibility of no parade if the Steelers win on Sunday. Last time, the team paraded through the town on cars, and the problem was that the team went through narrow streets, crowded with fans. At least there was a rally today. It didn't last long, but it was entertaining. Check out my pictures of the rally and video of Mayor Luke Ravenstahl throwing eggs at a Cardinal mascot.

Monday, January 19, 2009 -- Afternoon

I forgot to mention last night that Hines Ward sat out most of the Steelers game yesterday after injuring his knee on a play. It seems that it's a sprained knee, and Ward will be getting an MRI on it sometime today. Supposedly Ward is claiming that he will be playing in the Super Bowl. I guess if the opportunity comes, you try to play, unless it does serious damage. After all, he will have some time to rest it since the Super Bowl is on February 1.

The Steelers played the Baltimore Ravens this evening in the AFC Championship. Right before the Steeler game started at 6:30 p.m., the Arizona Cardinals won the NFC Championship to get into the Super Bowl. Ken Whisenhunt, the coach of the Cardinals, was the former offensive coordinator for the Steelers. I was very tense watching the Steelers this evening because I wanted thme to win, and they weren't delivering a knockout blow. Both the Steelers and the Ravens were having difficulty getting first downs. The Steelers were the first to score with two Jeff Reed field goals. Then Santonio Holmes had a great run to get a touchdown. The Ravens pulled within two of the Steelers (14-16), but Troy Polamalu sealed the deal by intercepting a Joe Flacco throw and running it in for a touchdown. The gaiety turned to sorrow though when Ryan Clark hit Willis McGahee, and both players wound up lying on the ground. Clark managed to walk off under his own steam, but it looked like he had had his clock cleaned. McGahee didn't walk off the field. They called in a stretcher and wheeled him out. It didn't look good because McGahee wasn't moving after the hit. As he was being wheeled off, he did move his arms slightly. There were only three minutes left in the game at that point, and the Steelers had the ball because McGahee fumbled on the his. The Steelers ended it with Tyrone Carter making another interception. Final score: Steelers 23 - Ravens 14.

This weekend has been playoff weekend for the NFL. The Steelers played the San Diego Chargers in the late afternoon game today. Yesterday, the Arizona Cardinals beat the Carolina Panthers and the Baltimore Ravens beat the Tennessee Titans. Today, the Philadelphia Eagles beat the New York Giants. So as the Steelers game was starting, none of the other teams that had a bye last week had won their playoff game. The first quarter was pretty even. The Chargers scored first, and then in the second quarter took a 10-7 lead. Then the Steeler defense and offence showed up. Willie Parker had some great runs. Ben Roethlisberger was in great shape. You would not believe that he had a concussion in his last game. Santonio Holmes had a touchdown from a punt return. Final score: Steelers 35 - Chargers 24. Next week, the Steelers will meet the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship game.

Tuesday, December 30, 2008 -- Afternoon

For weeks now, people have been talking about Bill Cowher returning to coaching next season. The biggest competitor for his skills have been the Cleveland Browns. Well, early this morning, the owner for the Browns said that Cowher wasn't interested in going to Cleveland. And with that news there was a great whooping and hollaring in the 'Burgh because we really hate Cleveland and we like Cowher. It would have felt like a stab in the back if Cowher went to Cleveland. Then within the hour, there were rumors that he was going to coach the New York Jets. Cowher turned them down flat saying that he would want to have a general manager of his choosing. Now that made people wonder if the Jets would put their current general manager in a new role. However, I think that they are all missing the point that Cowher likes his current job as an analyst on CBS. After all, the hours are easy, and the pay is good. Cowher says he won't be coaching next year. Let's see if he sticks to that as the offers heat up.

The Steelers played the Cleveland Browns in the last game of the regular season. There was some question since the last game whether starters would play in the game, and Mike Tomlin said that they wanted to finish the season on a win. Things were going well. Willie Parker had a touchdown, and it looked liked the Steelers had run an interception in for a second touchdown. The refs thought it was an incomplete pass, but replay showed that it was complete. However, Tomlin didn't challenge the call so it was for naught. Then Ben Roethlisberger took a hit. He didn't get up from the ground, and the training team ewnt out to check on him. The announcers weren't sure what the problem was, although it looked like Ben whacked the back of his head off the ground. Ben wasn't moved for 13 minutes. Finally, they brought in a stretcher and took him off the field. I know that I was getting concerned because Ben didn't raise his hand for a thumbs up. Just as they neared the tunnel, Ben finally raised his hand for a thumbs up, and the whole stadium roared. During half-time, the CBS announcers said that Ben had a concussion and was being taken to the hospital for further analysis. Fortunately, the Steelers were playing the Browns, who were unable to put up much offense or defense. The Steelers won with a final score of 31-0.

The Steelers played the Tennessee Titans this afternoon. There was a great deal of hype about the game because the winner would get home field advantage in the playoffs. Unfortunately, the Steelers have been playing quite a few emotionally and physically draining games, and they weren't able to perform up to snuff. The Steeler defense did not allow a single 300 yard game in the entire season, until today. Ben Roethisberger threw two interceptions, and almost threw one to a couple of Titan defensemen (with no Steeler receiver in sight.) It was not a good game to watch, and the Steelers lost with a final score of 13 - 31. The Titans get home field advantage in the playoffs, and they were kicking the Terrible Towel into the ground today. We'll have to see what happens in the playoffs, but we really don't have a running game, and Roethlisberger is inconsistent.

The Steelers played the Baltimore Ravens in a late afternoon game. It was pretty much a battle of the defenses. Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers offense was doing a crappy job, but the defense was stellar as usual. The Ravens pretty much lead most of the game, but the controversy came about because of a touchdown catch by Santonio Holmes in the final minute of the game. Most thought that he wasn't in the end zone, and on review, the officials overthrew the call on the field and said that it was a touchdown. i think alot of touchdown calls are crap. "Did the ball break the plane?" Sometimes the ball barely touches the line on the field, and the person's body is outside of the endzone, and it's a touchdown. Holmes' body was in the endzone, and he pulled the ball into him. I don't know. Anyway, the Steelers clinched the division with the 13-9 win.

The Steelers played the Dallas Cowboys here in Pittsburgh. People were thinking that the Steelers would have an advantage because the weather had a wintery turn yesterday. There was probably an inch or two of snow on the ground and the temperatures with wind chill in the single digits. Although the Steelers scored first, it really wasn't looking good for them the entire game. Both defenses were playing well, and the wind was wrecking havoc with the ball. Things turned around in the last few minutes of the game. First the Steelers got a touchdown to tie things up. Then with less than two minutes left in the game, Deshea Townsend intercepted the ball and ran it in for a touchdown. The Cowboys weren't able to answer the score, and the Steelers won with a final score of 20-13.

The Steelers played the New England Patriots late this afternoon in Foxborough. At first things seemed to be going New England's way, and they took the early lead. However, the rainy weather was to the Steelers liking. They tied things by the half, ad then just came out to run away with the third quarter. It was shocking how many times the Steelers came up with the ball on interceptions or fumbles. Twice, James Harrison sacked Matt Castle, stripping the ball from him, and the Steelers recovered. The entire second half was Steeler football with the New England Patriots not able to score any points. Final score: Steelers 33 - Patriots 10.

Here in Pittsburgh, the Steelers were playing the Cincinnati Bengals. There were snow flurries in the air, but not alot of accumulation on the field. This is a short week for the Steelers since they just played on Sunday evening. By the end of the first half, the Steelers were leading with a score of 10-7. There has been alot of controversy following the Steelers this week because of the bungled call by the referees on Sunday. It seems that the Steelers should have gotten credit for the Troy Polamalu touchdown in the final seconds. Fortunately, the Steelers still had a one point lead so they won the game. The only thing that happened is that the people who bet on the game got screwed because of the point spread. I'm probably going to go to sleep before the game ends.

The Steelers played the San Diego Chargers in a late afternoon game at Heinz Field. There were snow flurries in the air most of today, obviously cold. The game was not a high scoring game because the field was frozen and slippery, and there was wind which was making passes and kicks difficult. With only 15 seconds left in the game, the Steelers were down two points. They almost got a touchdown, but there was a holding penalty. So the Steelers settled for a field goal and one point lead with only 5 seconds left in the game. The Chargers decided to go for a trick play, and there was alot of passing back to keep the ball in play. Well, Troy Polamalu tapped the ball with his hand, grabbed it and ran the ball in for a touchdown with the clock at 0 seconds. The refs reviewed the play, said that there was an illegal forward pass at one point, but the call was denied. The Steelers got the touchdown, and it looked like the refs were going to make them do the extra point. Then the refs thought about it again, and took away the touchdown, which was fine because the Steelers still had the win. The final score was Steelers 11 - Chargers 10.

The Steelers played the Washington Redskins last night in the Monday night game. Neither offense seemed to have been prepared to play, but both defensives were playing well. The Steelers started off the game with an onside kick that the Redskins recovered. You have to wonder why you would start a game out like that. Neither side was fairing well against the defense when Ben Roethlisberger injured his right shoulder with a quarterback sneak for a touchdown right before the half. Roethlisberger left the field after that, and Byron Leftwich ably stepped into the game. In fact, he seemed to be more stable than Roethlisberger, who completed only 5 of 17 passes and had an interception. The Steelers went on to win the game with a final score of 23-6.

The Steelers played the Cincinnati Bengals this afternoon in Cincinnati. The Bengals have really been bad this year, and they don't have a single win this season. Chad Johnson caused controversy when he asked to be traded but wasn't, and since then, he hasn't been given the ball much in the games. Also Carson Palmer has an injury and has been our for a few games. So there wasn't alot of concern about the Steelers winning this game. Although the Steelers got a 10 point lead in the first quarter, they started to ease off in the second quarter and the Bengals pulled within three points. The second half though was all Steelers, and they went on to win with a final score of 38-10. Troy Polamalu got his clocked cleaned in the third quarter when he put a hit on a Bengal and Palamalu's helmet came flying off. You could tell right away that Polamalu wasn't really quite thinking right after it.

I forgot to comment on Sunday evening's Steelers' game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Surprisingly, the Steelers were able to pull out a win, even though they have alot of injuries on the team and are otherwise playing like crap. Ben Roethlisberger is the most sacked quarterback in the NFL, and he was sacked even more in this game. All the fans have been calling into the sports shows to complain about the Steelers performance. Max Starks hasn't been playing, and they think that his inclusion on the team would help the offensive line. Who knows. All that I can say is that the Steelers seem to find a way to win, which I think is impressive.

The Steelers played last night in a real thriller. The Baltimore Ravens came to Heinz Field as favorites because they were undefeated so far this season. The Steelers weren't playing too well at the beginning of the game, and it seems that Ben Roethlisberger started yelling at the guys in the locker room during half time. I guess Roethlisberger was getting sick of getting sacked and spending so much time on his back. There was alot of finger pointing going on about the possible cause of the Steelers lackluster performance during the sports call-in show that aired during half time. Howver, things picked up when Roethlisberger got to go no huddle, and it resulted in a touchdown. The score was tied by the end of the game, and in OT, the Steelers got close enough for Jeff Reed to make a 46 yard field goal. There was a steep price to pay with several new injuries. Rashard Mendenhall suffered a fractured shoulder and Kendall Simmons injured his ankle. Final score: Steelers 23 - Ravens 20.

The team just played a crappy game although there were moments of brillance from the defense. They were having a good ole time intercepting the ball from Donovan McNabb, but the offense really wasn't able to get anywhere with it. Ben Roethlisberger left the game with a couple of minutes to play. The announcers were still commenting on his separated shoulder, saying that it was separated, but not alot. The final score was Steelers 6 and Eagles 15.

I watched some of the Steelers game on Sunday evening against the Cleveland Browns. The game was really affected by the remnants of Hurricane Ike as it meandered its way into Canada. There were high winds and some rain, and that made scoring difficult. The Steelers managed to pull out the win with a final score of 10-6. Ben Roethlisberger made the news again because he hurt his shoulder in the game. It seems that it was just sprained, but somehow a story got in the news that he has a separated shoulder. That's sort of typical of Roethlisberger. He always plays up his injuries as if he has something really serious when he only has a slight boo-boo.

I have to admit that I haven't been very interested in the Steelers lately. I guess that I'm just not as much a fan of football as I am of other sports, like hockey. The NFL started the regular season today, and the Steelers played the Houston Texans this afternoon at Heinz Field. The game was pretty much a route with the Steelers taking the early lead and just wiping the field with the Texans. There were quite a few interceptions. The final score was Pittsburgh 35 and Texans 17.

Monday, July 28, 2008 -- Afternoon

The Steelers started camp this weekend, and the big story was that Casey Hampton showed up for camp, and wasn't able to complete the physical. it seems that he failed the running test. In fact, he gave up on the running test. Hampton has had a problem with weight in the past, and this season, he didn't participate in some of the other mini-camps that might have gotten him into shape. Hampton didn't understand the big deal that Coach Tomlin made of it by putting Hampton on the PUP, or physically unable to perform, list. Hampton claims that it's just training camp and that he will be in shape for the rest of the season. I think that is just so much hooey. It's extremely unprofessional for Hampton to show up out of shape. What message does that send to the team management and players? Obviously that Hampton doesn't really care for his job. Maybe in the past, Hampton could lose the weight and get into shape quickly, but he's older now--over 30, and things don't come as easily as you age.
